Hare Krsna,
Coming Friday is Utpanna Ekadasi. The following is the back ground / real life information about this Ekadasi. Once Devas (demigods) and their King Indra were driven out of Swarga (heaven) by Asuras or Demons. As usual the Devas took refuge at the feet of Lord Vishnu and pleaded to him to restore their lost kingdom.
The current crisis for the Devas was created by Demon Mura – son of Demon Nadijangha and the ruler of Chandravati. Mura defeated all the demigods and started living in heaven. Lord Vishnu promised to help them and asked the Devas to assemble at Chandravati to fight Demon Mura. Soon Mura appeared before them with a huge army.

Before the battle began, Lord Vishnu appeared and led the army of the Devas. The Lord easily defeated the demon army but could not defeat Demon Mura. Their fight happened for 1000 celestial years. Lord Vishnu decided to take rest at a cave in Badrikasrama.
Lord Vishnu entered the cave and slept there for awhile. Mura soon arrived at the cave with the intention to annihilate Lord Vishnu. Suddenly, a fully armed female appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu and start fighting Demon Mura and she finally severed the head of Demon Mura. When Lord Vishnu woke up from His sleep, He saw the severed head of demon Mura and saw a female standing beside it.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said, "O most auspicious lady, what you have requested is granted. All My devotees in this world will surely fast on your day, and thus they will become famous throughout the three worlds and finally come and stay with me in My abode. Because you, My transcendental potency, have appeared on the eleventh day of the waning moon, let your name by Ekadasi. If a person fasts on Ekadasi, I will burn up all his sins and bestow upon him My transcendental abode. "'"These are the days of the waxing and waning moon that are most dear to Me: Tritiya (the third day), Ashthami (the eighth day), Navami (the ninth day), Chaturdasi (the fourteenth day), and especially Ekadasi (the eleventh day).
Krsna said to Arjuna - " Thus, O son of Prtha, I have described to you the origin of Ekadasi. This one day removes all sins eternally. Indeed, it is the most meritorious day for destroying all kinds of sins, and it has appeared in order to benefit everyone in the universe by bestowing all varieties of perfection"
Thank you
Sundar
